    ILNH FYI

Join ILNH in the New Hope Celebrates Pride Parade!  Saturday, May 18 – Marchers meet on York Street between N. Union and Main St. in Lambertville at 11 am. Look for the ILNH crew and wear your rainbow ‘Vote’ shirts if you have them, or just wear the rainbow. We will have the big white truck again this year, but space is extremely limited and will only take those who have challenges making the trek through Lambertville and down S. Main, New Hope. Sign up on Facebook, and leave a comment if you need to ride.

New Springboard event scheduled! Mark your calendars for June 3 to attend the Springboard on Dark Money. Heather Santos from America’s Promise will be our expert and speaker. Learn more about the work of America’s Promise and their efforts to make the 28th Amendment to get big money out of politics a reality. Location is TBD, so stay tuned!

Support our Springboard partners and take action – ILNH has held three awesome SpringBoard events to date focusing on Immigration, Civil Rights and the NJ Budget. To hold these events, we rely on partner organizations for their expertise, and offer a means to amplify their work and support their organizations. Please consider taking on the calls to action or donating to these worthy organizations.

If you live in New Jersey, call or write your three legislators and the governor. Residents of Lambertville, East or West Amwell, or the Mercer County municipalities of Ewing, Hopewell, Lawrence Township, Pennington, Trenton or West Windsor can find the contact info here:   https://ilnhclone.indivisible.blue/contact-state-level/.  If you live elsewhere in New Jersey, you can find your legislators for your municipality here: https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/members/legsearch.asp.

    Message:

I support  A4743 / S3229, which expands access to driver’s licenses. This bill would make sure that more New Jerseyans, regardless of status, to be tested, trained, and insured for a driver’s licenses.

It would create a safer New Jersey and allow residents to more fully engage in our economy and make our state stronger.

    Message:

I urge you to support A-314 and S-3261 restricting the use of isolated confinement in correctional facilities. Isolated confinement causes lasting physical and neurological effects and PTSD. Your support in ensuring passage of this important legislation is necessary to effectuate meaningful and overdue prison reform.

    Message:

I urge you to support the millionaires tax. Note: Senator Shirley Turner has endorsed the millionaires tax, write or call to thank her.

    • The millionaires tax would affect less than 1% of NJ residents.
    • It is supported by 70% of New Jerseyans.
    • The NJ Legislature already voted for the tax 5 times (and Christie vetoed it).
    • With the Trump tax scam, the richest 1% would still end up with a net tax cut, even with this tax.
    • Rich people will not leave NJ because of the tax.
    • The funds raised go into the Property Tax Relief Fund.

Note: NJPP will hold their Tax Fairness Advocacy Training in New Brunswick on May 19, at 10 am. Sign up here:  https://njwec.salsalabs.org/taxfairnesstraining/index.html

ATTENTION! JUNE COMMUNITY GATHERING –  The June Community Gathering will be held on Sunday, June 9, at the Lambertville Elks. The Elks building is around the corner from Cavallo Park where the “We Are One” picnic will be held the same day. The “We Are One” picnic celebrates the diversity of our community with music, food and childrens’ activities, and is organized by the Human Rights Council of Lambertville in partnership with Fisherman’s Mark. The picnic is held from 1-5 pm, so make plans to attend before or after you come to the Community Gathering.

Civil Rights Action Group – Learn more about Mass Incarceration through Books and Movies – The group had a successful book drive for their Books through Bars initiative – see the pix of some of the members getting ready to deliver some of the collection. In addition, the group is convening their first Book Club meeting on Tuesday May 14th. Stay tuned for more information on more Book Club meetings and an upcoming screening of 13th – a film that explores the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the U.S. at the Acme Screening Room in June.

Indivisible Liberty T-Shirts are still availableIf you didn’t get one, or you know someone who’s coveted yours, both the red and green Lady Liberty versions are available in both men’s and women’s. Contact Cindi Sternfeld or pick one up at the Swag table at the Community Gathering.

There is a TON of stuff happening over the next couple months for ILNH volunteer involvement! Here’s the schedule –  plan to join as many events as you can.

ILNH formed around a collection of issues we were (and still are) concerned about. They include healthcare, women’s rights, civil rights, securing the vote, getting out the vote, environment, ending gun violence and more. On their surface, each of these seem like no-brainers for progressives but, without legislative backing, they remain words on a sign or topics of conversation that go nowhere. The place where ideals become policy is in the state budget. If it’s not supported in the budget, it’s not going to happen. Grassroots passion and commitment can go much further if we understand the levers that move policy. This Springboard information session will help us bring our efforts to the next level.  [This was posted by Cindi on FB. ov]

    • April 25: Green Amendment Postcard Party

New Jersey Assemblyman Tim Eustace, Maya van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper, Assemblywoman Pinkin and Assemblywoman Sumpter, announced new legislation that, if passed, would provide the people of New Jersey with a constitutional right to a healthy environment. The proposed provision identifies the State as trustee of public natural resources including the water, air, flora, fauna and the climate, and ensures an obligation by government officials to conserve and maintain these resources for the benefit of present and future generations. Including the proposed language in the New Jersey ensures that the right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment will be protected as firmly as other essential rights are protected, like the right to free speech, freedom of religion and private property rights.

Indivisible LNH and Bucks Together to Host Ezra Levin at Candidate Endorsement Meeting

Indivisible Lambertville New Hope and Bucks Together to Host Ezra Levin, Co-founder of Indivisible.org at Candidate Endorsement Meeting
Lambertville, NJ & New Hope, Pennsylvania – Wednesday, September 12, 2018 – Indivisible Lambertville-New Hope and Bucks Together have joined forces to host Ezra Levin, co-founder of the national Indivisible organization and co-author of the Indivisible Guide. The event will be held at the Cornerstone Event Center at the Eagle Firehouse, 46 Sugan Road, New Hope, PA on Sunday, September 16, 2018.

The event will celebrate the endorsement of a number of candidates at the national, state and county levels by local Indivisible organizations for the 2018 elections. The Pennsylvania candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, Scott Wallace, along with other endorsed candidates will also be in attendance.

“According to the Washington Post 43% of eligible voters did not vote in 2016, and the outcome has been devastating,” said Cynthia Sternfeld, director, Indivisible Lambertville New Hope. “If we want things to change, we must get people to the voting booth. Indivisible stands as thousands of local groups inspired by Ezra Levin and the original founders, who are actively working to strengthen our Democracy, preserve civil liberties and get out the vote.”

For the full list of candidates endorsed by Indivisible Lambertville-New Hope, please go here.

Indivisible Lambertville New Hope is a local, grass roots volunteer organization focused on educating and uniting citizens in actions that support its core values of democracy, equality, inclusiveness, honesty and respect. The organization was founded in January, 2016 and currently has more than 1000 members.
  • GOTV-NJ

Getting people to vote is going to be the most crucial part of the mid-term elections. It’s time to start thinking about how you are going to help this effort because it really is up to us all. Whether you go door to door canvassing or staff a phone bank, now is the time to decide how your energy is going to help change our current political situation.

Caroline Armstrong is keeping ILNH constituents informed about GOTV activities and sign-ups for the Malinoski campaign via Facebook and email, or contact her to learn more. Contact her at typeting@comcast.net to get on a weekly list of opportunities to GOTV!

    NJ Upcoming events:
    Taste of the Towns Fundraiser
    Sunday, August 5 – 2:00-4:00
Dolce Restaurant, 161 Main Street, Flemington
    Guest Speaker: Andrew Zwicker Tickets
NJ Residents – Where Will You Be On Nov. 6?

If the answer to that is out of state, make sure you fill out an application to vote by mail. This is especially important for college students who are out of state. Unless your college address is your permanent one, college students need to vote in the state their parents live in. Here’s a link to the application for an absentee ballot.

While you can apply for a vote by mail ballot up to seven days prior to the election (or the day before in person), why wait? So that it doesn’t slip your mind while you are caught up in your studies, students are encouraged to complete their application before they leave for college!
  • Holiday Jam Celebrates the Indivisible Guide

Holiday Jam Celebrates the Indivisible Guide

At a meeting both lively and quick, nearly 200 attendees filled the Cornerstone Event Center on Dec. 10 for Indivisible Lambertville-New Hope’s first Holiday Jam. Guest speaker Billy Fleming, co-author of the Indivisible Guide, roused the crowd with the guide’s history and inspiration.

Billy reminded us what 6,000+ Indivisible organizations along with other like-minded groups have managed to accomplish this year, saying that “we had no reason to win anything, with a Republican Congress and administration, yet we did.” He cited the repeal of ObamaCare, the travel ban and the effort that spurred Alabama residents to get out the vote, winning a Senate seat for Democrat Doug Jones in a deeply red state.

Although the focus of Indivisible.org has largely been on national politics to date, the organization is already looking at how to do in statehouses what has been accomplished in Congress. He credits the local Indivisible groups like ours for “all their good ideas,” which they then share with others and amplify.

“Keep doing what you’re doing, and if you need more from Indivisible.org, let us know,” he said.

Action: Check out Indivisible435.org for information and ready-made materials covering Elections 101, Voting Rights and Voting Suppression, Voter Registration, Endorsement Guides and more. Policy information will be added especially as hot button items arise.
