ILNH Statement on the Attack of the Capitol and Electoral College Vote

We, the volunteers of Indivisible Lambertville/New Hope, are deeply saddened by the insurrection and violence last night during the ministerial process cited in our Constitution to formally declare the next President and Vice President. We were sickened by the display of white supremacy, the lack of preparation and the actions by the Capitol Police to protect our democracy from an insurrection that had been publicly called for and incited by the 45th president.

Our work going forward has never been more clear. For the United States to truly become a nation of equals, we must work to elect officials that share the values of equality and justice for all in every level of our government. We must stay actively involved in our governance, holding officials accountable to meeting our values and needs. We must step up to run for office. We must partner with other groups to understand the needs of their constituents and to join forces  to get this work done. It was the efforts of people like Stacey Abrams and groups such as Black Voters Matter, League of Women Voters and others that turned Georgia blue and now gives Democrats control of the House, Senate and Presidency, albeit by slim margins.

It is imperative that we now reach out to our legislators first in the House, to draw up and pass articles of impeachment of Mr. Trump from office, then in the Senate to convict and remove him. He is directly responsible for last night’s insurrection. We must prevent further damage to our nation that could occur over his remaining days in office, and prevent him from ever holding office again.

We have much work to do, including remembering our own self care so we can stay strong throughout the marathon. Stay alert, stay active, but allow a moment to take a moment of breath and a sip of champagne on Jan 20th, and then turn our efforts to transforming America’s ideals into America’s reality.

    Indivisible: Impeach, Remove, and Disqualify

    01/06/2021

Washington, DC — Today, the Indivisible Project released the following statement:

“We are calling for the impeachment and removal of Donald Trump from office, and his disqualification from holding future office.

“We simply cannot just wait for Trump to leave office as his threat level to our democracy continues to increase. The House of Representatives must draw up articles of impeachment immediately, move quickly to vote on them, and send them to the Senate for a speedy trial, where Trump must be convicted and disqualified from ever holding federal office again.

“In the wake of the coup attempt at the Capitol, Republicans must face an explicit choice as to whether or not they will fully and completely reject him, and ensure that he can never hold elected office again. Impeaching and convicting him is the first step toward reversing the tide of violence, insurrection, and white supremacist terror that he has incited, at the Capitol and beyond.”

Whew. After the whirlwind of two political conventions, I’m both energized and outraged and I’m sure I don’t have to say why. We continue to be reminded why we started down this path almost four years ago, and feel even more strongly that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the antidote to the diseased version of Democracy offered by the current administration. I’ve taken to counting the Biden/Harris signs on my daily treks, and am heartened that they are outpacing those for Trump – at least in Hunterdon, a traditionally red county. But that doesn’t hold true everywhere, and so we need everyone to put their pedal to the GOTV metal with all the gas you have in the tank as we propel into Election Day.

This month, there’s a wealth of content from new and occasional contributors as well as seasoned staff. Be sure to read Michelle Harris’ experience as an expat voting from abroad and then as a newbie poll worker, plus another piece on what you can do to get involved to help this year’s voting process. Cindi Sternfeld and Sarah Gold give a nod to Labor Day, with articles on how the pandemic calls us to prepare for the changing workplace, and the value of unions and minimum wage – even as both decline. Amara Willey sees both conventions as asking us to call on our better angels, (although I may offer a reminder that Lucifer was an angel of a darker nature). Great stuff and I am extremely grateful for their efforts and perspectives.

Roll up your sleeves, Indivizzies, GOTV needs you! Be sure to post your GOTV hours in the spreadsheet on the website. Olga is tracking against our goal. And come to Sunday’s September Community Gathering – I need to see your faces!

    Much love,

    Deb

  • From the Editor: I Really Don’t Care. Do You?

     Contributed by Deb Kline.

    Good news!

We are under three months from the November 3 election, and pollsters, pundits and prognosticators are saying Joe Biden will be the winner of the 2020 Presidential Election.

    I really don’t care.

I don’t care what the predictions are – even those that come from ‘experts’ who have a 100 percent accurate track record of predicting the outcome since we began electing presidents.

I’m not being a Debbie Downer – despite the unfortunate shared name. What I’m also not being is complacent. Not for one moment will I think that Joe has it in the bag, or that the wider percentage of eligible voters have ‘seen the light’ despite their party affiliation and general laziness or other excuses for not voting.

The stakes are just too high in this election and the opposition will stop at NOTHING to ensure that the mentally and physically disabled occupant of the White House is re-elected.

I get it. You’re already exhausted by the constant onslaught of news about the corruption, the self-dealing, the dirty, underhanded tricks, the lack of compassion for (fill in the blank here: COVID victims and families, children in cages, soldiers killed by Russian bounty hunters…).

    I don’t care.

But I really do care about you. I care about you and your ability to live without fear of your government and your ability to have the full spectrum of rights currently afforded to primarily the wealthier white male population. I care about clean land, air and water so the next generations can live healthy lives, and about giving each of them the education needed to bring their talents and skills to creating a better society.

I care about honesty and decency, something I see in each of you and the work you do everyday, but something entirely absent in the current political climate. I care about each of the values that Indivisible Lambertville/New Hope has published on our website, and I will not rest until I believe we are on the road to rebuilding the vision for America of “liberty and justice for all.”

Our work is to overcome all the gerrymandering, voter suppression, the siphoning of votes, foreign interference, the hacking of voting machines, the lies about voter fraud, the closing of polls in democrat-leaning districts, the disenfranchising of registered voters, ballot harvesting, obstructionism, and the lack of enthusiasm for politics in general.

Our work is to elect the honest, decent, compassionate human being that stands in direct opposition to the reality show farce that has polluted the presidency. Our work is to ensure we maintain the House and elect a Democrat majority in the Senate. Our work is to bring good, qualified legislators to state and local positions that share our values.

Please, please, please, make a commitment to a minimum hours of time per week to apply to GOTV.  We have a breadth of tools in the ILNH GOTV Toolkit which is continually being updated with new opportunities. We are sending weekly GOTV alerts of ways to keep active and all from the comfort of your home. There are virtual social gatherings so you can chat, have your dinner and/or glass of wine while writing postcards to voters all across the country. There are workshops for making your own personal GOTV video to post to YouTube and our website and share with your networks.

Fight hard. Dream big. Visualize Joe Biden, Amy McGrath, Jamie Harrison, Mark Kelly, Sara Gideon, Cal Cunningham, John Hinklelooper, Cory Booker, Tom Malinowski and other Dems declared in a landslide win for Democrats November 4.

    And then…we dance!

In solidarity and with much love,

    Deb
