  • Maybe No Russians Are Going To Jail, But…

On Friday, July 13, right before President Trump’s visit to Russia, 12 Russian intelligence officers were indicted by Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. After the announcement, Senator Charles Schumer of New York and other Democrat leaders called on Mr. Trump to cancel his meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in Finland, but it went on as scheduled.

The New York Times reported that the 29-page indictment details the hacking of hundreds of people affiliated with the Clinton campaign, as well as other Democratic Party organizations. Although it is unlikely that the 12 agents will ever come to trial in the United States, this begins to tell the story to the American people of what happened with the 2016 elections.

The report outlines continuing attempts to compromise election infrastructure — including hacking state boards of election, secretaries of state, and election software providers. The indictment does not allege that the operation ultimately affected vote tallies.

According to The Washington Post, four days after the indictments were released, conservative Republicans again called for an investigation of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Mr. Mueller’s boss, for allegedly threatening congressional aides, an allegation he has already denied under oath. President Trump cannot directly fire Mr. Mueller, but he could fire Mr. Rosenstein, clearing the way for the appointment of someone who might curtail Mr. Mueller’s investigation. An investigation of Mr. Rosenstein might influence public opinion, and if Mr. Trump’s base supported firing the Deputy Attorney General, it might prevent Congress from reprimanding the President for such an action.

    Act Now:
Sign up for a rapid action rally.
The rally will take place if Mr. Trump fires Mr. Rosenstein.
  • GOTV PA – Lock in the Keystone State!

As the summer of our discontent veers toward the fall elections, it’s time to kick up our activism. Distractions abound. Beachcombing, picnics, lounging poolside, relaxing time with family and friends, all provide a necessary antidote to the toxicity that threatens to envelope us, but one thing is for sure – burying our heads in the sand will not make “IT” go away.

More, with the student volunteers soon heading back to school, there will be a void in the campaigns that needs to be filled. From the increasingly palpable impacts of climate change on the environment to the outright horror of toddlers and children separated from their parents and imprisoned to what can only be called “Traitorgate”, we must take a stand now.

NJ Residents – Where Will You Be On Nov. 6?

If the answer to that is out of state, make sure you fill out an application to vote by mail. This is especially important for college students who are out of state. Unless your college address is your permanent one, college students need to vote in the state their parents live in. Here’s a link to the application for an absentee ballot.

While you can apply for a vote by mail ballot up to seven days prior to the election (or the day before in person), why wait? So that it doesn’t slip your mind while you are caught up in your studies, students are encouraged to complete their application before they leave for college!
  • WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Federalist Society and Influencing the Court

The Federalist Society (FS) is a very powerful, right wing, political organization that has succeeded in placing an unprecedented five lawyers on the supreme court. In addition, 17 of Trump’s 18 Federal Court appointments are members and were recommended by the Society to Trump. Federalist Society Supreme Court Justices so far include Scalia, Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch. In addition, Trump’s latest nomination to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanugh is another recommendation.

The organization started off in alignment with traditional conservative values but has since drifted to become a radical and dangerous organization. The Federalist Society was founded in 1982 by conservatives from the Reagan administration and failed Reagan Supreme Court nominee, Robert Bork. It started out innocently enough with an objective that is consistent with general conservative principles such as preserving freedom, separation of governmental powers and avoiding judicial activism by strictly interpreting the law as it is written.

The group is funded by some of the wealthiest and politically active conservatives including the Koch Brothers and the Mercer family in addition to the late oil baron, Richard Mellon Scaife. The organization has about 70,000 members. The same people who fund and control the Federalist Society also fund the campaigns of the Republican presidential candidates, making intricate connections between the Federalist Society and the Republican Party.
The organization acts as a fraternity and center for the cultivation of hard right, conservative attorneys. They have a presence on the campus of the most powerful Law Schools including Harvard and Yale where they started. Members are cultivated for federal jobs and judgeships. The most committed and connected members make it to the short list for appointments.

Their goal is to stack the courts with the most conservative judges. Prior to their formation, both Democrat and Republican Presidents used the recommendation of the American Bar Association who rates judges based on their qualifications and not ideology. Ideology certainly played into the process of each President but not as strongly as it does today.

Aside stacking the courts, the Federalist Society is the force behind efforts to destroy the New Deal Social Safety Net (Social Security, Medicare), giving all corporations the right of free speech (and unlimited political contributions), giving corporations religious protections even if they are not religious organizations, hence allowing them to be exempt from Obamacare regulations (Hobby Lobby), and they oppose the spread of Islam. They also hold that women and LGBT members are not in a “protected class” under constitutional law.
