  • Biden’s First Term

If you are out there canvassing, someone might ask you, “What have the Democrats accomplished, really?” You can feel secure in responding, “A lot!” Here’s some of the highlights of what the Dems have done in the last year and a half.

    Economy

Unemployment rate down to 3.9 percent, lowest rate since 1969

    8.3 million jobs created

Wages paid by private businesses saw an increase of 2.4 percent from Jan to Oct last year and disposable income rose by 3 percent

Buy American Order – encouraging the purchase of American-made products

Moratorium on student loans which deeply affects the lowest income Americans

Revamped the PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) which encourages people to work in lower-paying public sector jobs

Release of strategic oil reserves to keep oil prices down; now trying to make nice with Saudi Arabia to increase oil production (not my favorite thing he’s doing for sure but it will help the economy – I would prefer if we pivot to renewables instead of continuing with fossil fuels)

Deficit reduced by $350 billion (with projections of another $500 billion to 1 trillion in further reductions by end of September)

Inflation reduction act passed – creates millions of clean energy jobs, reduces deficit spending, makes corporations pay more of their fair share of taxes.

    Pandemic

    Rejoined World Health Organization

1.9 trillion COVID relief, including $20 billion for the vaccination program and $350 billion into local relief efforts – legislation also tackled child poverty and nutritional issues

    Free COVID tests

Requiring federal employees including military to get vaccinated

Getting 72 percent of adult Americans fully vaccinated

    Running PSA campaigns around vaccination

    Climate

    Re-entered Paris Climate Accord

Agreement to reverse deforestation and pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30 percent by 2030

Ordered all government agencies to halt the financing of new international carbon-intensive fossil fuel projects and work towards clean energy use

Zero-emission vehicles mandated for the federal fleet (will create 1 million new jobs for Americans)

550,000 charging stations to be built for EV vehicles

    Large-scale offshore wind projects

Inflation reduction act makes largest investment in clean energy ever in history and creates millions of clean-energy jobs; incentives for individuals and businesses to create/purchase clean energy vehicles and appliances

    Infrastructure

Passed bipartisan 1.2 trillion infrastructure package – including expanding internet to those who don’t have it, clean energy, and safe drinking water

    Eased supply chain issues

Working with Taiwan to increase microchip supplies

    Human Life

    Passed the gun safety act

    Passed Hate Crimes Act

Halted federal executions (which DT had reinstated after it had been paused for 17 years) – doesn’t affect states though

Diversity in his cabinet and in the WH staff

Overturned previous administration’s ban on openly trans members of the military

Increased children’s access to free lunches

    Lowest child poverty rate ever

Food insecurity in American households dropped 32 percent

Inflation Reduction Act lowers costs on prescription drug prices for seniors and lowers health insurance costs for lower income Americans

Health care and benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits

    Judicial

Appointed 41 federal judges (73 nominated) – 80 percent are women and 53 percent are people of color – this is often where Supreme Court Justices come from (highest appointment rate since Reagan)

    Foreign Policy

Strengthening the QUAD (US, India, Australia, Japan)

Anticipated war in Ukraine, warned Russia, and got 30 countries to work together to oppose Russian aggression

Support of Ukraine without getting us into WWIII & world sanctions on Russia

    Strengthening of NATO

End of 20-year war in Afghanistan

Executed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri

  • After the Screaming Stops

There is urgency in this moment, an urgency rising out of anger, frustration, fear. Protests, marches and rallies occur on a daily basis. Petitions to expand the court, solicitations to support organizations and candidates who propose to counter reactionary rulings flood inboxes and social media. Again, we scream at the injustices of the justices who determine fates that SHOULD NOT be within their purview, who determine which citizens are eligible for which rights.

We scream because a pregnant 10-year old was denied an abortion in her home state. We scream because guns have more rights than their potential victims. We scream because more than half of the population of the US have been relegated to second-class citizens in more than half of the states, their right to privacy nullified and reproductive health pre-determined.

We scream for our planet, because despite the Doomsday Clock being 100 seconds until midnight, five Supreme Court Injustices decided to minimize the ability of experts to determine the rules and regulations to protect our air. We scream for the generations who came before us, that their fight wasn’t in vain, and for the generations to follow.

We ask, “What are we going to do?  What’s the right action, the right message, the right direction to take? We need a place to put our outrage, our fear and our hope. We need our community, our people and connections to feel less alone, less powerless.

As Elizabeth Warren would say, “here’s the thing…” We know what to do. We know there are people and organizations already working to protect the rights and freedoms at risk. [List organizations and people to support]. We know we need to give them our support.

As an organization, Indivisible Lambertville/New Hope focuses on three areas: Saving Democracy/Voting Rights, Getting Out the Vote, and Fighting Disinformation. (link to earlier blog announcing three areas).

Our commitment is to do what we can to empower our constituents/members to turn your screams into meaningful outcomes. For us, that means that we work to get everyone, and we mean everyone, actively participating in electing candidates who represent our values in what will be one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime.

In 2018, ILNH ousted a legacy Republican Congressman to help elect Tom Malinowski against most odds. In 2020, we did it again and with the combined efforts of Indivisibles, MoveOn and other like-minded organizations, elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

In 2022, we need to shore those who will fight for the rights and freedoms for all in the U.S. House and Senate, and Pennsylvania.

Once again, ILNH will be here to help educate, motivate and activate our people through events, gatherings, information and opportunities to elect those who will defend Democracy and understand that all people deserve equal rights. Keep checking our website for upcoming gatherings, important voter information and candidate canvassing opportunities.

Bring your outrage, fear and hope, your shoe leather, pens and postcards. Now is the time we need to get busy. Because what happens after the screaming stops depends on you.

  • Actions Speak Louder Than… Wringing Your Hands

Several of you have reached out to us asking, “WHAT ARE WE DOING?”  While this feels like a WE moment, remember that WE are made up of each of us as individuals. That means you have a role to play. Right now, ask yourself, “WHAT AM I DOING?” More specifically, what can I do that will make a difference?

The response to what you can do is not particularly sexy or flashy, but we are encouraging them anyway because we believe, wholeheartedly, that they are our best chance. All of these are ways that you can give meaning to your anger and frustration. In truth, we have been training for this moment for the past five years:

    • You’ve learned how to call your elected representatives, demand action and ask the hard questions – DO THAT NOW.
    • You’ve learned how to use postcards to activate voters – DO THAT NOW.
    • You’ve learned how to use ResistBot to reach out to your representatives – DO THAT NOW.
    • You’ve learned how to phone bank to voters.  Sign up with a campaign – DO THAT NOW.
    • You’ve learned how to use the MoveON texting program – DO THAT NOW.
    • You’ve learned how to be vocal on social media – DO THAT NOW.
    • You’ve learned how to CANVASS voters at their homes – for all that is good and holy, DO THAT NOW ????????

To what end will we take these actions?  We got here because the other side has been laser-focused on this for 50 years, regardless of how it might have hurt them otherwise.  Here is how WE can be laser focused in our response:

    1. Ensure that:
      1.  Roe gets codified at the federal level (and in Pennsylvania)
      2.  Our agencies are allowed to enact environmental regulations that protect the planet
      3.  The Supreme Court is a body that reflects and respects the majority of our nation
    2. That means we must reform the filibuster, or get an exception for:
      1. Roe
      2. Expanding the Supreme Court
    3. Which means we need to:
      1. Keep every Senate seat we have and elect at least two more who will support reforming the filibuster (Pennsylvania, lookin’ at you)
      2. Keeping and expanding the House, so we can get legislation passed to codify Roe and empower our agencies

To accomplish any of this, elections are critical. We need to work every day to make sure that voters have convenient, unrestricted access to their ballots, and to elect representatives, senators, and governors who will put a stop to this nonsense.

For the ILNH part, here is what we are doing to help make that happen:

    1. We are scheduling canvass training events for those who are hesitant about getting out and knocking on doors. We’ll give you the info, skills and confidence, plus access to seasoned canvassers willing to partner with you.
    2. We are fielding teams to canvass for our endorsed candidates, Tom Malinowski, Ashley Ehasz, John Fetterman and Josh Shapiro. We aim to be out there every weekend between now and Election Day. We are posting opportunities for these candidates on our website here. Sign up if you want to be part of a team here.
    3. If you are unable to canvass, make calls or write postcards. We’ll also be posting some of these events on our website. There’s enough work for everyone, and everyone is needed.
    4. We are working with other organizations on a New Jersey statewide coalition of Indivisible groups to build power with our elected representatives. Our goal is to have regular calls with Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez on these critical issues, to be sure they are aware of our outrage, and to find out from them what we can do locally to advance this agenda.
    5. We are connected with Indivisible Bucks and the Indivisible National’s Give No Ground Campaign.

That’s some of what we’re doing. Do you have something you want to do? Let us know! (info@ilnhclone.indivisible.blue) This is the time for all hands on deck, so if you have an idea that will help get candidates elected who can protect our democracy, we want you to be able to implement it! Talk to us, and let’s see how much power we can build together.

  • Hooray for a Space for ILNH!

We are over the moon that we have been offered access to not one, but two spaces in which we can hold in-person gatherings, trainings, speakers, and more.!  Much gratitude to Union Coffee on North Union and to Soupcon Salon on South Main St. – both in Lambertville, which have contacted us about opening their doors to Indivizzies to bring folks together and do the work needed to SAVE DEMOCRACY!

In addition, we also thank Dig Yoga for the years they hosted ILNH, and to River Valley Realty for the numerous ways they have supported us and continue to do so.

    (Can you tell we’re excited??)

Our very first LIVE gathering at Union Coffee will actually be this Monday, July 11 at 6:30 pm at 49 N. Union St. in Lambertville to write postcards for a pro-choice candidate in Pennsylvania. The shop will be closed for business, so please bring your own beverage (and cups), and if you’re so inclined, a snack to share.

We will also be working on a calendar of events that will be posted to the ILNH website. If you’re interested in helping to plan AND execute programming and events on Monday July 18, send an email to info@ilnhclone.indivisible.blue.
